One glorious Summer’s day I was out in our yard with Pip, our old dog. Pip was a beautiful black Spitz and a sweeter natured pooch you’d be hard pressed to find. We were just sitting on the warm grass, side by side, enjoying the sunshine. Little did I know that Pip was going to teach me something very important that lazy afternoon.

Memories of sunshine and swimming

Conversations sometimes bring back memories of the time I spent in my childhood in Durban, South Africa. I lived there for two and a half years until I was twelve. It was the mid 70’s, a time when apartheid was still in place. There was segregation everywhere. Buses, park benches, public toilets, even the beaches had signs saying ‘Whites only’ or ‘ Blacks or Coloreds Only’.

Live as a child

Is it really possible to rediscover the joy, that carefree attitude that most of us remember from our childhood? Nothing in adult life is fashioned to encourage us to take pleasure in the simple things in life anymore. Should we? More importantly, could we even if we wanted to?

Power doesn’t always lie where you think

Some people who attain a certain level of authority in their careers seem to forget that others are just as important as they are. It happens a lot in workplaces, where the manager or supervisor thinks that their role automatically gives him/her the right to belittle or abuse someone. They assume their status alone is a shield against any repercussions if they choose not to treat someone properly. This tale I’m about to tell shows that’s not always the case and it’s 100% true.

Trust…a minefield of emotion

I’d been talking to a dear friend who’d been badly let down by another so called ‘friend’. Backstabbing would be an understatement of what happened. She was in the ” make the world go away” phase. Broken trust can be such a horribly gut-wrenching emotion! Having been through that, I sympathized and shared my own experience.

Plants are just like people

Last year I planted bulbs for the first time. Now, not being known for my green thumb when it comes to flowers, I awaited them with fingers crossed and high expectations. After all, I just had to put them in soil and water them occasionally, can’t get much more foolproof than that, surely!

The less intervention by my good self, the better the survival chances…that seems to be the rule when it comes to flowers. (Once I was admiring some at the garden center, only to find myself being led away by the arm with the words “Let it live” ringing in my ears.)
