As parents we do what we think best for our kids given the resources we have at hand. Whether you’re rich or poor doesn’t matter a bit though when it comes to what they need most. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to parcel up things like happiness, love and joy and simply hand it to them? Perhaps. But then they wouldn’t learn much of life for themselves that way either. It would be like looking at someone’s vacation photos instead of being there experiencing it and saying it’s the same thing.
A Gift For You
If I could parcel up joy in a gift for you,
I’d do it oh so carefully, with love and tenderness.
On a midnight blue satin cushion, I’d present to you
A golden tasseled box, swathed in shimmering ribbons.
Unravel them and starlight would burst forth,
Drenching you in a cascade of confetti sparkles.
Alas, there is no parcel nor cushion.
I give only what I can… my words,
Shared with the same love and tenderness.
Allow yourself to be open to joy, my child.
Seek it out within in your heart.
Be glad when you discover there’s a reason
That the parcel does not exist.
You see, none would ever be strong enough
To contain joy’s sheer luminosity.
